This is a collection of what I think are the best books for teaching English as a foreign language.
I have used many of the books on this list for years, and I highly recommend them to everyone. There are a few brilliant new ones here too.
I hope you find them useful!
If you would like to suggest other books for teaching English as a foreign language that I should read please let me know in the comments below.
The CELTA Course is the only CELTA preparation course endorsed by Cambridge ESOL.
It provides full coverage of the CELTA syllabus in a ready-to-use course. The CELTA Course is divided into user-friendly sections:
* Input sessions (40 units on ‘The learners and their contexts’, ‘Classroom teaching’, ‘Language awareness’, and ‘Professional development’)
* Teaching practice
* Classroom observation
* Written assignments and tutorials
* Resource file
The Trainee Book includes a range of material to be used in input sessions, helpful advice about the course, and a wealth of useful reference material.
An absolute essential for all CELTA trainees!
Learning Teaching has been one of the most successful guides to English since it was first published in 1994. Its no-nonsense approach has made it a superb teaching textbook for initial training courses, and also an essential handbook for practising ELT teachers. The third edition has been extensively revised and restructured to take recent developments in ELT into account and now includes a DVD featuring a full lesson being taught as well as demonstrations of practical teaching techniques.
A comprehensive analysis of form and function, with suggestions for presentation and practice of structures in context and a review of common learner errors for each tense. Contains photocopiable material.
For each tense this book provides:
- the form and function of the tense
- suggested contexts with which to introduce it
- a list of problems that foreign students often have
- methods of solving these problems
- a large set of photocopiable drawings to elicit tenses from students.
This is the one TEFL book I would not be without.
This is a book which does exactly what it says on the cover. It provides a huge instant repertoire of teaching ideas – including both classroom classics that all ELT teachers come to know and love – and fresh new activities at a range of levels from elementary to upper intermediate. The clear organisation of the book makes it easy to cross-refer and supplement your course book or syllabus. All the activities have been classroom-tested – and none of them require photocopying.
Business Benchmark Second edition is the official Cambridge English preparation course for Cambridge English: Business Preliminary, Vantage and Higher (also known as BEC), and BULATS.
This Teacher’s Resource Book includes a wide range of supplementary photocopiable material with answers, including complete extra lessons and case studies. It provides information about how the activities in each unit relate to the Business Preliminary exam and BULATS test. There are notes on each unit with advice and suggestions for alternative treatments and information about how this course corresponds to the CEF, with a checklist of ‘can do’ statements.
A complete answer key to both the Business Preliminary and BULATS versions of the Student’s Book is provided as well as complete transcripts of the listening material with answers underlined.
Authentic Examination Papers from Cambridge English Language Assessment (IELTS Practice Tests)
Cambridge IELTS 10 provides students with an excellent opportunity to familiarise themselves with IELTS and to practise examination techniques using authentic test material prepared by Cambridge English Language Assessment. It contains four complete tests for Academic module candidates, plus extra Reading and Writing modules for General Training module candidates. An introduction to these different modules is included in each book, together with with an explanation of the scoring system used by Cambridge English Language Assessment. A comprehensive section of answers and tapescripts makes the material ideal for students working partly or entirely on their own.
The world’s best-selling grammar title – English Grammar in Use – is now in an updated Fourth edition.
It has a fresh, appealing new design and clear layout, with revised and updated examples, but retains all the key features of clarity and accessibility that have made the book popular with millions of learners and teachers around the world.
The CD-ROM contains lots of additional practice exercises to consolidate learning, ideal for self-study but also suitable for reinforcement work in the classroom. An online version and book without answers are available separately.
