The mobile phone is ubiquitous. But it’s not been around for that long really. Has any other device changed the way we live and interact with the world more dramatically?
In the mid 1980’s mobile phones cost over $4,000 so very few people could afford one. It is therefore only the last 30 years or so that mobile phones have become so heavily integrated into our daily lives, including those of young children.
A brief history of the mobile phone is described along with the advantages and disadvantages the impact they have had on our lives.

Around the world, six billion people possess a cell phone subscription, compared to 5,000 customers in 1948. In the United States, 91 percent of adults have a cell phone and 61 percent of those own a smart phone.
Although cell phones are a useful addition to people's lives, they also present various concerns. The primary health issue is that cell phones distract us while walking and driving.
People have cell phones for a variety of reasons. Most adults enjoy the ability to call in cases of emergency, to listen to music, and to navigate while driving. Interestingly, President Obama is only allowed to use a Blackberry since iPhones are more easily hacked into. Children mainly use their phones to contact their friends, averaging over 2000 texts a month. Social media is easily connected to via their phones and many games are free to download.
