I have used many of the books on this list for years, and I highly recommend them to everyone. There are a few brilliant new ones here too.
I hope you find them useful!
If you would like to suggest other books for teaching English as a foreign language that I should read please let me know in the comments below.

Grammar For English Language Teachers
Learning Teaching has been one of the most successful guides to English since it was first published in 1994. Its no-nonsense approach has made it a superb teaching textbook for initial training courses, and also an essential handbook for practising ELT teachers. The third edition has been extensively revised and restructured to take recent developments in ELT into account and now includes a DVD featuring a full lesson being taught as well as demonstrations of practical teaching techniques.

Teaching Tenses
A comprehensive analysis of form and function, with suggestions for presentation and practice of structures in context and a review of common learner errors for each tense. Contains photocopiable material.
For each tense this book provides:
- the form and function of the tense

- a list of problems that foreign students often have
- methods of solving these problems
- a large set of photocopiable drawings to elicit tenses from students.
This is the one TEFL book I would not be without.

700 Classroom Activities
This is a book which does exactly what it says on the cover. It provides a huge instant repertoire of teaching ideas - including both classroom classics that all ELT teachers come to know and love - and fresh new activities at a range of levels from elementary to upper intermediate. The clear organisation of the book makes it easy to cross-refer and supplement your course book or syllabus. All the activities have been classroom-tested - and none of them require photocopying.
